Labeling of Asbestos Containing Materials in Mechanical Areas

by schmidy last modified Aug 23, 2007 02:23 PM

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires building owners to post signs at the entrance to mechanical areas to warn of the presence of potentially asbestos containing materials. Accordingly, the University has posted each mechanical room door with an asbestos information sign (pdf). This sign explains the labeling system used for pipe and equipment insulation in the mechanical rooms: asbestos materials are labeled ASB and non-asbestos materials are labeled NON-ASB. The sign also warns of the hazards of breathing asbestos fibers, instructs workers and contractors not to disturb asbestos containing materials and tells them who to contact so that U of L DEHS can arrange for asbestos removal by trained, state-accredited asbestos workers.

Due to the long pipe runs in the utility tunnels beneath Belknap campus, a different labeling scheme was put in place. Pipes with asbestos containing insulation are coded by a lengthwise stripe of red spray paint. Pipes with non-asbestos insulation are coded by a lengthwise stripe of green spray paint.
