Asbestos Management

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS) provides asbestos management and abatement services in University buildings maintained by the Physical Plant. Physical Plant Maintenance and Custodial Services staff are provided Asbestos Awareness Training so that they will recognize potentially asbestos-containing materials, stop their work and contact their supervision to initiate an asbestos work request to DEHS. Maintenance and renovation projects performed by outside contractors are reviewed by project managers during the design phase to identity potentially asbestos containing materials, which will likewise initiate a work request to DEHS.

Specially trained DEHS staff determine if suspect materials do contain asbestos via EPA mandated sampling and analysis. Any work involving removal, repair, maintenance or cleanup of asbestos containing materials is then conducted by licensed and certified workers in accordance with federal, state and local EPA and OSHA regulations. Adherence to these regulations is important to assure protection of workers, building occupants and the environment.

When intact and undisturbed, asbestos building materials do not pose a health risk for building occupants. Damaged asbestos containing materials should be reported to Physical Plant Work Control or DEHS, 852-6670. Specially trained DEHS staff are available to visit the area, determine if a suspect material contains asbestos and perform a hazard assessment. To avoid asbestos exposure, never attempt to handle damaged asbestos.

Questions regarding the Asbestos Management Program can be directed to the University’s Industrial Hygiene Manager, or call 852-6670.
