OSHA revised its Hazard Communication Standard to align with the United Nations' Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) and published it in the Federal Register in March 2012 (77 FR 17574).

The documents below provide information on these HAZCOM revisions and how chemical hazards are classified and communicated to UofL faculty, staff, and research personnel. The two significant changes include the use of new labeling elements and a standardized format for Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), formerly known as, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs).

OSHA requires that employees that work with and around chemicals, including such items as; lab chemicals, bleach, cleaners, disinfectants, paints, thinners, glues, degreasers, and compressed gases complete GHS training by December 1, 2013. To assist you in determining which employees should attend the GHS training, please use the following guidelines:

You must attend GHS training if:
  •  Your job requires either that you are in and around laboratories, or work in offices that support laboratories
  • You work in custodial, maintenance, or warehousing
  • You participate in any  patient care activities or clinics
  • You work in buildings or departments that store or use chemicals
If you primarily sit at a desk and have no potential to work with or become exposed to hazardous chemicals, then it's not necessary to attend the GHS training.

***UPDATE: Additional GHS Training Sessions have been scheduled for the month of January, and are listed below. Training will last between 30 to 45 minutes***
