Woodford R. Porter Scholar Program
The Porter Scholarship program is the largest scholarship organization at the University of Louisville. Named after a former university trustee, the late Woodford R. Porter Sr., the scholarship program was created in 1984. The mission and purpose are to provide academic, personal and professional support and to all recipients of this scholarship. Areas of sup-port are based on the four pillars of promise which include scholarship, leadership, service and heritage.
2012-2013 Scholarship Performance highlight In collaboration with Office of Student Financial Aid, performance reports releases show that the scholarship program continues to make considerable gains in the automatic renewal category. From 2005-2011, scholarship performance rested under 49% or less for automatic renewals for all Porter Scholars (process by which students are required to submit written appeal for their scholarship if the required grade point average is not maintained). Scholarship performance for the AY 2012-2013 have officially surpassed that of 2011-2012 (55%) and remains above the 6 year performance of 2005-2011 at 57%.
Woodford R. Porter Scholarship Program (Launch and Continued Development): The Woodford R. Porter Scholarship Program (formerly the Society of Porter Scholars) is the largest African American scholarship organization at the University of Louisville. Through its foundational four pillars, the program provides academic and personal/professional developmental support to Porter Scholarship recipients. It promotes interaction, enhances leadership opportunities, and encourages professional and/or graduate education for outstanding student residents of Kentucky.
Academic year 2012-2013 has been devoted to the continued development of programs and services of-fered to our 500+ porter scholar membership organization. More importantly, the program was charged to not only support students as they matricu-late but to also educate them in unique and creative ways that supplement their overall undergraduate ex-perience at the University of Louisville. It is from this vision and perspective that our administrative team, advisory committees, campus supporters and community partners welcome our new fundamental and powerful concept toward this effort entitled “BUILT 2 GRADUATE” aka B2G. The B2G experience officially launched on October 3, 2012 with special guests, President Ramsey and 7 community partners. The new student success model has been designed to provide each scholar with an opportunity to partici-pate and become connected to programs and services that assist them at their appropriate level of classifica-tion (FR, SO, JR, SR) and comprised of themes and special focus areas.
Re-establishment of the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship Executive Board
The academic year of 2011-2012 was the year of overhaul and restructure. Thirteen (13) porter scholars were also appointed to serve on the restructuring leadership team to accomplish this task. Their service will fully commence August 2013 and conclude in May, 2014.
