Academics

Updates regarding changes to academic services or events for UofL students

Classes

Classes delivered remotely starting March 18, including all summer terms. Registration for summer terms is now open.

All classes will be offered remotely via online or other alternative learning options beginning Wednesday, March 18, through April 28. Classes already offered online will continue as originally scheduled. If you have questions about a specific course, contact the instructor.

Due to some assignments needing significant adaptation, faculty will be allowed to modify their course syllabi. Some faculty may decide to conduct their on-line classes during the normally scheduled class time, while others may post materials that you can access at any time. Please make sure you know what is expected of you, including due dates for quizzes, assignments, discussions, etc.

If you're new to online learning, review the Online Learning Checklist for students to get started.

HSC/Clinical Programs

Health Sciences students who are involved in clinical programs will receive further guidance from their academic deans. Information about labs, examinations and other items will also be provided.

Pass/Fail Policy Changes

All undergraduate and graduate students will be permitted to convert any of their courses to pass/fail grading for this semester only.

In accordance with the Pass/fail policy for spring 2020, all undergraduate and graduate students will be permitted to convert any of their courses to pass/fail grading for this semester only. All courses for which you receive passing (P) grades will count toward degree requirements, which overrides some program and college policies. At the undergraduate level, all grades of D- or better for which you elect the pass/fail grade will convert to a P; at the graduate level, all grades of C- or better will convert to a P. Pass grades do not impact GPA, but an F will be calculated into your GPA.

Advising

Registration begins March 31.

We strongly encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity to consult with your advisors remotely, whether by email or phone, before making plans for upcoming semesters. You can schedule an appointment with your advisor via CardSmart or contact your academic advising unit directly. Advising appointments are essential to your success as your advisor can assist you with addressing concerns in your classes, planning for your summer experiential learning opportunities, and understanding paths into/through your major and/or minor.

Bursar/Advising Holds

Advising holds for Summer/Fall 2020 have been removed. If you have not yet been advised this semester, you are encouraged to reach out to your advisor to discuss your plans and any challenges to navigating your education that you are currently facing.

The bursar will remove all Spring 2020 bursar holds making it easier for students to register and work through this uncertain time.

Any registration holds will be replaced with a Transcript/Diploma hold. Spring 2020 balances will be reviewed in upcoming months for payments and potential placement of a new registration hold. If you would like more information on setting up a payment plan for your unpaid spring balance, please contact bursar@louisville.edu.

Commencement

The date for spring degree conferral remains May 9, 2020, and students approved to graduate this spring will be awarded the degrees and certificates they have earned at that time. A commencement ceremony recognizing Spring 2020 graduates will be held in December 2020

While the spring commencement ceremony is postponed, we still want to celebrate our grads’ accomplishments! At 10 a.m., Saturday, May 9, UofL will launch a virtual graduation celebration at uofl.edu/hereandbeyond2020.

Graduates, we know this isn’t how you envisioned finishing your college journey, but we will continue to honor your years of hard work, the knowledge you’ve acquired and the memories you have made at the University of Louisville. We are proud of the goals you’ve achieved and want to share that pride with your family, your friends and the entire community.

We can't wait to celebrate with you – virtually on May 9 and in-person this December.

Online Textbooks

Those who rely on library course reserves may have difficulty accessing textbooks due to COVID-19 recommendations. For those students, there are now free, remote options that might have what you need.

  • The UofL Bookstore, via RedShelf eBooks, is providing access to up to 7 free eBooks from participating publishers. You can search by title and ISBN at the RedShelf website.
  • A company called “VitalSource” has partnered with several Textbook Publishers to provide free access to texts. Just create a profile using your UofL email, download the app for your preferred operating system, click the “explore” option and search for your textbook. You should have the option to “borrow” the text online until May 25th.
