The Virtual Library for Community Engagement is a one stop shop for submitting, viewing and storing data surrounding community engagement activities.

Community Engagement describes the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity (Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching).

Embedded in this definition are the following characteristics -

1. There is a substantive link with significant human needs and societal problems, issues, or concerns and the university activity or initiative;
2. There is a direct application of student, staff or faculty knowledge to address human needs and societal problems, issues, or concerns;
3. There is utilization of the faculty member’s academic and professional expertise;
4. The ultimate purpose is for the public or common good and student learning, faculty research or service
5. There is a clear link/relationship between the program/activities and an appropriate academic unit’s and the university’s mission/goals.

Any documents that adhere to the characteristics identified above, may be included in the virtual library.
