2023 Derby Lecture Series

Dr. George P.Smith is the Recipient of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.  The Nobel Prize was awarded to Dr. Smith for his development of phage display, a groundbreaking advance in which phages, a type of virus, are genetically manipulated to display chosen proteins on their outer surface. The displayed protein acts as a label and provides a simple and effective method to purify these viruses from their surroundings. Dr Smith has also received the following prestigious awards:

  • Member, National Academy of Sciences 2020
  • Promega Biotechnology Research Award,
  • America Society for Microbiology 2007
  • Elected Fellow, AAAS 2001

Dr. Smith's visit and lectures are organized by the UofL Chemistry Graduate Student Association (CGSA) who is sponsoring the event.  Co-sponsers include Clariant Corporation, Michelin North America, Inc. , and the University of Louisville College of Art and Sciences.

CGSA is excited to announce of the Derby Lecture Series for the 2023 year! Since 1978, graduate students at the University of Louisville have hosted numerous Nobel Laureates as the Derby Lecturer for the Derby Lecture Series. We consider this event to be our proudest achievement, and it is our honor to continue this long-standing annual tradition. The Derby Lecture Series is among the most unique university events organized by graduate students. It is planned around our city’s biggest day, the Kentucky Derby at the world-famous Churchill Downs, which is just five minutes from our department!

The Derby Lecture series includes several events for the chemistry department including meet and greet lunches with the invited guest, a banquet, and a picnic. The Derby Lecturer presents two lectures, one related to their research work and another general audience lecture that is broader in scope to help bridge the gap between academia and our community. This year, the technical lecture will be on Thursday May 4th, 2023 at 11:00 am in the Belknap Academic Building (BAB) Rm 129 and the general lecture will be on Friday May 5th, 2023 at 1:00 pm in UofL Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium. The banquet to honor our guest will be held on Thursday May 4th, 2023 5:30 pm at the Louisville Seminary's historic Garden court, more information here.
