Everyone begins their job search at different stages, however these few pieces are necessary for job-seekers everywhere to land a great opportunity.
- Have a high-quality resume and cover letter. Applicants who spend the time and effort necessary to develop high quality application documents have a better chance of making it through the screening process. We recommend a tailored resume and cover letter for each job application. You can schedule an appointment with a staff member to review your documents and provide recommendations before you apply for positions.
- Upload your resume to Cards Career Connection powered by Handshake. By uploading your resume to Cards Career Connection powered by Handshake, you can easily complete you profile. The system also allow you to apply to full-time, part-time, internship, work-study, and volunteer work from local, national, and international employers.
- Get involved with Career Development Center programming. Participating in Career Fairs, Cardinal Career Treks, presentations and more events will better position you to understand what employers are looking for when hiring. Take advantage of our free programs to learn more about professional development, local employers, hiring events, information tables and sessions, on-campus interview events, and more. - Meet with the Employer Engagement Team. Schedule an appointment to speak with a member of the Employer Engagement Team to talk about the internship or full-time job search. You can also meet with a career counselor for one-on-one help with your resume and cover letter, practice interviews, and more.
Locating and landing a full-time job opportunity requires planning, knowledge, and patience.
Get in the Right Mindset
Chances are that you will not know the person with whom you will be negotiating. If you are lucky enough to be acquainted, spend some time reviewing what you know about this person's communication style and decision-making behavior. Since most people find the unknown a bit scary ask yourself what approach to negotiating you find most comfortable.
- What will make you confident enough to ask for what you want?
- How will you respond to counteroffers?
- What are your alternatives?
- What's your bottom line?
- What is your strategy?
Be sure you know exactly what you want, not approximately. This knowledge does not mean you will get what you want, but having the information will help you determine what you are willing to concede. Unless you know what you want, you won't be able to tell somebody else. Clarity improves communication, which makes for more effective negotiations.
Before diving into the job search, it’s crucial to learn about the organizations you want to work for. Know their services, clients, competitors and the industry in which they operate. We can provide you with tips that can help in your preparation. The Career Development Center also offers several diversity related resources for students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Find information describing your target organizations using resources such as:
- Professional and business directories, such as the Hoover's Handbook of American Business.
- The employer's website, literature, annual reports and other brochures.
- Use online resources to read news about a particular organization.
- Newspapers and professional periodicals can be very helpful.
- Network with people working in or familiar with the organization.
- Use LinkedIn, the premier social networking database to research employers and their latest events and happenings.

Congratulations - you've had a successful interview and have been offered the position! After you've been extended a job offer, a negotiation about salary and benefits is typical. A negotiation is a series of communications (either oral or in writing) that reach a conclusion between the new employee and hiring company. Successful negotiating is planned and requires strategy, presentation and patience. You have many tools available to find different salary ranges. You need to utilize these tools prior to interviewing or negotiating.
