How to become a Biology student: applying to the major

To be admitted to the undergraduate degree program (BA/BS) in Biology, a student must:

  1. Complete BIOL 240, BIOL 242, and BIOL 244 (or equivalent courses taken at another institution) with a grade of "C" or better;

  2. Complete MATH 111 (or an equivalent course) with a grade of "C" or better OR place into a mathematics course above the level of MATH 102 (on the basis of either the university math placement examination or ACT/SAT scores); and...

  3. Have an overall university grade point average of 2.0 or better.

If you meet these requirements, you may fill out an on-line application to declare a biology major.

After you are officially admitted to the program, you will be assigned a faculty member in the Biology Department as your advisor. On your first visit to your new advisor you will be able to pick up your program of study, which clearly lays out for you the courses that you need to complete your degree. More information about meeting with your advisor is available through our page on being advised throughout your undergraduate education.
