The purpose of these awards is threefold:
- To recognize and reward individual faculty members, staff members, and departments in the College of Arts & Sciences who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to diversity, and the creation of an inclusive campus community;
- To create an incentive for an on-going commitment to diversity; and
- To communicate the College’s commitment to diversity.
The value and importance of diversity to the College of Arts & Sciences is reflected in the A&S Mission Statement, and it is defined in the A&S Definition of Diversity.

A&S Definition of Diversity
We understand diversity as integral to excellence in education and thus as central to our educational mission. We commit ourselves to tbuilding an exemplary educational community that offers an inclusive and equitable intellectual climate, an understanding and respect for the range of human diversity.
We understand diversity to refer to the multitude of differences between individuals and groups where those differences possess social meanings that are relative to specific historical contexts. Thus, a commitment to diversity in our historical context in which some individuals and groups have been systematically marginalized or excluded compels special attention to the categories of race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, national origin, sexual orientation, ability, age, and religion. Valuing diversity demands a commitment to the inclusion and equitable treatment of all, but in our historical context with special focus on members of these marginalized and excluded categories.
Diversity must also be understood relative to our specific historical metropolitan, statewide, national, and global contexts. At the University of Louisville, the concern to create an inclusive and equitable educational environment centers on Kentucky’s historically underrepresented and marginalized groups, with a special focus on African-Americans . This should not be understood, however, to exclude a concern with other dimensions of diversity found within the University and the metropolitan community.

- $1,000 to be awarded as a taxable honorarium to staff & faculty and $1,500 to Departments.

Nominators should coordinate with candidates to ensure that all materials are prepared by the deadline.
Nominees are responsible for delivering the nomination packet to the A&S Office for International, Diversity, and Outreach Program Office (331 Gardiner Hall).
A&S Staff Diversity Champion Award
This award is for a staff member of the College of Arts & Sciences who embodies a commitment to diversity and the construction of an inclusive campus community, where a commitment to diversity means focusing on groups who have been systematically marginalized or excluded, and challenging systems of privilege.
A&S Faculty Diversity Champion Award
This award is for a faculty member of the College of Arts & Sciences who embodies a commitment to diversity, and constructing an inclusive campus community, where a commitment to diversity means focusing on groups who have been systematically marginalized or excluded, and challenging systems of privilege.
Exemplary Department Diversity Award
This award is for a department or program in A&S. The department or program should demonstrate an on-going commitment to diversity through the development of a comprehensive diversity plan that address the needs and concerns of students, staff and faculty, as well as pedagogy, professional development, and student inclusiveness.
