A&S Planning and Budget Commmittee Minutes April 22 2002

Minutes: A&S Planning and Budget Commmittee

April 22, 2002

Members present: Susan DeWitt, Dean Julia Dietrich, ex officio; Linda Gigante, Thomas Riedel, Pamela Takayoshi, Chair; Nancy Theriot

Guests: Brain Huot

The meeting was convened at 11:05 A.M.

Brian Huot from English discussed with the committee the idea of incorporating some of the Eng 102 composition classes into courses in other subject areas. He supported the idea as pedagogically sound. He will provide us with further information regarding the number of sections offered, how many are taught by part time instructors, graduate students, and faculty, etc. Professor Huot pointed out that, at least initially, there would be added cost for training of faculty involved in such courses.

The committee then proceeded to discuss the information provided by Professor Huot. It was agreed that courses with significant content could not be changed into such a new course, since not enough time would be available to devote to writing. However, the current .Modes of Inquiry. course would be a good course to redesign to meet the objectives currently addressed by Eng 102. It was agreed to investigate the feasibility of running a pilot project by canceling some .Modes of Inquiry. courses in the Fall and creating some new content based composition classes to be offered in the Spring of 2003.

The committee approved the minutes of the last meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 12:05 P.M.
