February 12, 2003

Members Present: G. Barnes, E. Glass (A&S; Student Council), A. Kolers, J. McLeod, M. Rohmann, E. Segal (Chair), R. Taylor, W-B. Zeng

Guests: J. Grubola (ART), T. Mackey (HIST), M. Perlin (BIOL)

The minutes of the meeting of January 22, 2003, were approved as distributed.

Ella Glass was welcomed as the new student representative to the committee.

The committee approved the addition of HIST 101 and 102 as requirements for the major in History, effective Fall 2003. No changes were made to the requirements for the minor.

Changes were approved to AP and IB credit in Biology, effective Fall 2003. A score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP exam will receive credit for BIOL 102, rather than 240-241. The International Baccalaureate exam will earn credit for BIOL 102, but no longer for BIOL 104 (lab).

Effective Fall 2004: Prerequisite changes were approved for BIOL 260, 261, and 262: a grade of "C" or better will be required in the courses prerequisite to these courses.
BIOL 348: Animal Development was changed from a 4 hour to a 3 hour course.

The committee approved new requirements for admission to the majors in Fine Arts (both studio and Art History programs). First-year students will be encouraged to apply for admission to the major concurrent with their admission to the University and will be able to submit a separate application form to the department once they have been admitted to the University with an "intended major" in Art. Additionally, currently enrolled or transfer students will be required to have a minimum 2.0 gpa overall as well as to submit the departmental application. These requirements will go into effect for first-time-in-college students for Fall 2003. Currently enrolled UofL students wishing to declare a major in Art/Art History will have until August 1 to submit an application for admission to the major under the current standards. After that time, they also will be required to submit the new departmental application. The department will communicate this change to currently enrolled students with an intended major in art before the end of the spring semester.

Also beginning Fall 2003, Fine Arts will stipulate that majors must earn a grade of C- or better in all 300-level courses in the major, whether taken at UofL or at another institution. (This requirement does not apply to currently approved majors.)

Action was deferred on TA 525: Advanced Studies in Acting, pending clarifications from the department.
