CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES

November 9, 2000

The proposal for changes to the degree program in studio art was discussed and a number of questions identified. Action was postponed until a departmental representative can be present.

The committee had questions about the removal of prerequisites in Russian language courses and action was deferred until a departmental representative can be present.

There was a brief discussion of placement standards in Math and English courses, especially in light of the transfer of remedial courses to the Pathways program. Departments will be reminded that changes to placement procedures need to come through the committee.

The following course actions were approved, effective Fall 2001:

MATH 102 was removed as the prerequisite for MATH 105, 107, 109, 111, 112, 180, and 190. The prerequisite will be "appropriate placement score or equivalent coursework." This change was initiated because the Mathematics Department will no longer teach MATH 102 after the current academic year.

WMST 500: Senior Seminar-prerequisite changed to "junior standing."

FREN 320: French Skills Overview-prerequisite changed to FREN 221 or equivalent.

HUM 320: Survey of Christian Thought and Culture (delete)
HUM 369: Asian Theatre (new course)

GERM 311: Independent Study (new course)

GR 301: Advanced Greek I (new course)
GR 302: Advanced Greek II (new course)
GR 303: Greek Prose Composition (new course)
GR 401: Selected Readings I (new course)
GR 402: Selected Readings II (new course)

The following title changes were approved:
HUM 300 TO: Ancient Near Eastern Cultures
HUM 301 TO: Greek and Roman Cultures
HUM 307 TO: East Asian Cultures
HUM 311 TO: Hebrew Bible/Old Testament (with description change)
HUM 319 TO: Survey of Christian Thought and Culture (with description change)
HUM 341 TO: Religions of India (with description change)
HUM 354 TO: Masterpieces of Ancient Greece
HUM 355 TO: Masterpieces of Ancient Rome
HUM 356 TO: Masterpieces of the Middle Ages
HUM 357 TO: Masterpieces of the Renaissance

The prerequisite was changed from "junior standing" to "sophomore standing" on the following: HUM 300, 301, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306, 307, 309, 311, 312, 316, 317, 318, 319, 321, 322, 323, 324, 325, 326, 331, 335, 338, 339, 340, 341, 342, 343, 344, 345, 354, 355, 356, 357, 358, 359, 361, 361, 365, 366, 367, 368, 376, 377, 378, 379, 380, 381, 382, 384, 387, 395, 396.

The prerequisite was changed from "senior standing" to "junior standing" on the following: HUM 500, 510, 511, 512, 513, 514, 524, 555, 561, 562, 581, 591, 592, 593, 594, 595, 596.

All prerequisites were removed from the following: ANTH 309/WMST 300; ANTH 323/PAS 383; ANTH 310/PAS 368. Also, ANTH 305, 314, 316, 317, 319, 322, 324, 326, 330, 333, 334, 335, 337, 338, 351, 352, 352, 361, 377.

ANTH 371: Ethnographic Methods-prerequisite changed TO ANTH 201 or consent of instructor.
ANTH 545: Problems in Urban Anthropology-prerequisite changed to "junior standing."

ENGL 101 and 102 were approved for the written communication General Education Requirement and will be forwarded to the General Education Course Committee. The committee wished to see the mechanisms of assessment articulated more specifically and will request that the department do this as the review continues at the university-wide level.
