COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES

November 2, 2000

Members Present: L. Larson, T. Mackey, R. Powers, R. Roebuck, M. Rohmann, E. Segal, M. Stenger (Chair), R. Taylor

Guests: I. Levi (MATH)

The minutes of the meeting of October 31 were approved as distributed.

Professor Levi presented the revised proposal for the doctoral degree in Mathematics, explaining why several years had elapsed between the College's original approval of the doctoral program proposal and the revisions now before the committee. Curriculum changes in the new proposal, which concentrates on industrial and applied mathematics, resulted from a needs assessment which the department had undertaken prior to submitting the proposal to the Council. The committee approved the changes and was of the opinion that the curricular revisions need not be resubmitted to the Assembly.

The request for a cross-list between WMST 537 and ECPY 645 was put on hold. The committee questioned whether courses at different levels should be cross-listed, and additional information was needed on a 500-level syllabus. The committee suggested that it might be recommended to Women's Studies that the courses be co-taught when appropriate, but not cross-listed.

The committee approved the changes to the major and minor in Pan African Studies, as re-submitted. It was recommended that course numbers be specified in concentration areas, in light of the current development of the degree audit program.

PHIL 524: Philosophies of Peace was to be returned to the document for clarification of the difference in undergraduate and graduate level work.

The committee returned to the discussion of the Department of History's proposal to remove prerequisites from most 300- and 500-level courses. It was noted that similar requests were being received from other departments. There was particular concern about the absence of prerequisites for 500-level courses. Professor Mackey said the department would accept as a friendly amendment the addition to 500-level course descriptions the recommendation for junior standing. The motion to approve the prerequisite removal (and to add recommendations for class standing or course completion to course descriptions) passed with 4 for and 1 opposed. Professor Mackey abstained from voting.

The following course actions were approved, effective Fall 2001 unless otherwise noted:
