COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES

APRIL 19, 1999

Members Present: J. Hart, T. Mackey, S. Maloney (Chair), M. Rohmann, R. Sahoo, M. Stenger, R. Taylor

Members Absent: R. Baldwin

Guests: Dean Shirley Willihnganz

Professor Maloney called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m.

The committee and Dean Willihnganz discussed the college's admission policy in light of proposed university changes in admission policy, and the dean said that she looked to the committee to give direction to the college response. Also discussed was the status of conditionally admitted students and possible interventions to improve their chances for academic success. Among possible interventions discussed were:

  • increasing sections for supplemental instruction;
  • requiring conditionally admitted students who earn below a 2.0 in their first semester to take a time management/study skills course in the second semester of enrollment;
  • requiring any student who is placed on warning after the first semester of enrollment to take a study skills course.

The committee instructed the dean to institute interventions she deemed appropriate if it was necessary to plan them prior to the fall semester, and to report any such programs to the committee in the fall.

The committee then returned to its discussion of acceptance of courses in transfer and the definition of "academic in nature." It was decided to accept any course which earned collegiate-level degree credit at any college or university which is a member of good standing of one of the six regional academic accrediting associations.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:20 p.m.
