CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES
SEPTEMBER 2, 1997

Professor Segal called the meeting to order at 9:40. With the correction of a typographical error, the minutes of the meeting of June 9, 1997, were approved as distributed. Professor Willard discussed the proposed changes to the major in Communication, which were approved, to be effective Fall 1998. COMM 311: Persuasion; COMM 327: Mass Media Processes and Effects; and COMM 350: Communication Theory were removed from the core requirements in the major. COMM 250: Computer Communication and COMM 304: Argument in Everyday Life-WR were added to the core requirements. The remainder of the core [COMM 201, COMM 305, COMM 315, and COMM 316] was unchanged. The new core will consist of 18 rather than 21 hours; the three hours removed from the core will be added to the category of Communication electives at the 300-level or above, increasing that requirement from 9 to 12 hours. As a part of the changes, the following course actions were approved: COMM 150: Computer Communication (delete) COMM 250: Computer Communication (add) COMM 305: Intro to Mass Communication (description change) The committee approved BIOL 641: Advanced Eukaryotic Genetics, which will be forwarded to the Graduate Council. The committee approved a student petition for permission to apply hours earned while in Continuing Studies to the minimum number of hours required for honors eligibility in Arts and Sciences. The remainder of the meeting was devoted to discussion of the changes to undergraduate policies proposed by the Undergraduate Initiatives Commission. The discussion will be continued at the next meeting. The meeting adjourned at 10:55. [9/2/97]
