CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES
JANUARY 20, 1998

Professor Segal called the meeting to order at 11:05. The committee changed its Spring 1998 meeting time to Mondays, 9:30-11:00. The minutes of the meeting of December 9, 1997, were approved as distributed. The committee deferred action on POLS 392 (removal of prerequisites) and the Political Science Department's proposal regarding Advanced Placement Credit until a departmental representative could be present to answer questions. HIST 304: Historical Methods was approved as a new course and for WR credit. The course will be required of history majors, effective AY 98-99. PAS 384: Disease, Ecology, and Environmental Management in Africa was approved for WR credit, effective 98F. A title change for PAS 338 was approved. The course had been "Entrepreneurship and Economic Development" and will be retitled "Race and Economics." BIOL 301/302: Introduction to Ecology and BIOL 410: Applied Ecology were approved as optional courses in the newly created minor in Culture, Ecology, and Health in the Department of Pan African Studies. A proposal from the Department of Psychology to grant Advanced Placement credit was approved. Credit for PSYC 201 will be awarded to students who present a grade of 3 or higher on the Advanced Placement examination in Psychology, effective 98F. A proposal from the Department of Mathematics to grant Advanced Placement credit in statistics was approved. Credit for MATH 109 will be awarded to students who present a grade of 3 or higher on the Advanced Placement examination in statistics, effective 98F. The following policy from the Department of Mathematics was approved: "A student may not register for credit in a lower-level mathematics course that is a part of a sequence of prerequisites for a higher-level course for which the student has already received credit." As approved, the policy applies only to courses in the Department of Mathematics. The committee discussed the application of a similar policy to other areas, and will consider whether or not to make such a college-wide proposal at a later time. The committee approved a new minor in African American Theatre in the Theatre Arts Department. The 19-hour minor will require: TA 326 3 hours from TA 322 or TA 323 1 hour in TA 350 12 hours to be selected from TA 362, TA 363, TA 364, TA 365, and TA 366. The meeting was adjourned at 12:05.
