Natural Sciences Scholarships

The Noyce Scholarship is a scholarship that is available to individuals who are pursuing a degree in Math, Chemistry, Physics, or Biology and have an interest in continuing on to become a teacher. The National Science foundation will be awarding a minimum of $10,000 per year in forgivable loans in return for teaching two years for every year of scholarship received.

Seniors with STEM majors who could graduate in the spring but who are willing to extend their undergraduate experience by a semester to accommodate the education courses are urged to apply.  Students ready to graduate with one major and who wish to take additional courses to achieve a minor in another STEM area, and thus become dually certified will be highly sought after by school systems.  The Noyce Scholarship can be used to fund the additional course work.   STEM majors are:  Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

 Here is the timeline:
    * Applications are due by March 15
    * Interviews will be scheduled by March 22
    * Interviews will be completed by April 5
    * Preliminary Offers of scholarships will be made by April 7
    * Students with preliminary offers will need to complete a JCPS application and background check by May 7
    * Final appointments as Noyce Scholars will be made by May 15 to allow Financial Aid to complete final financial aid arrangements.

Women Leading Kentucky is accepting applications for $1,000 and $1,500 college scholarships through Jan. 31.  Applicants must be female sophomores or juniors enrolled full time at a Kentucky college/university, have at least a 3.0 grade point average and have demonstrated leadership abilities on campus and/or in their communities.Approximately eight students will be selected for scholarships, and all will be informed of their selection by March 31. The Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund provides grants to students actively working for peace and justice. These need-based scholarships are awarded to those able to do academic work at the university level and who are part of the progressive movement on the campus and in the community. The NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP) is seeking candidates for the Spring 2010 internship session. The USRP program is a mentored internship for undergraduate students across the United States. Students majoring in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics will have the opportunity to gain hands-on technical and research experience. Students will work with a mentor in their field to work on a project with real applications in the aerospace industry or possibly on future NASA missions.

In order to qualify students must be enrolled at a university and in their sophomore, junior or senior year. Students must have a GPA of 3.0 and be a U.S. Citizen.

Arts and Culture - Art History, Fine Arts, and other Internships

The Arts and Culture Partnerships Initiative is an effort to develop (and sustain) closer collaborative relationships between the University of Louisville and local cultural institutions, including museums, historic homes and arts and cultural organizations.  Some partners are Frazier International History Museum; Speed Art Museum and other historic homes and museums and cultural organizations. There will be 4-5 academic paid for credit internships for 3 free credit hours available for any undergraduate and graduate students at the University beginning in the Spring 2010 semester.

 Just recently, as you know, The Carnegie Foundation has affirmed that UofL is an extraordinary model in terms of outreach. So the Arts and Culture Partnerships Initiative is a narrow segment of this much larger sphere that includes the Signature Partnership in West Louisville and the medical outreach that the university does and all the outreach internships programs that happen in the Business School, the Speed School, communication department and so on. The request for this funding initiative will be focused on support of UofL undergraduate student research that targets populations which are the focus of the commission diverse, underserved, under-represented and/or vulnerable populations. Any student research project submitted for funding must have UofL faculty supervision and appropriate institutional approval. The student investigator must have completed his/her sophomore year or completed at least 60 credit hours as the University of Louisville at the time the application is submitted. The student need not be from a minority or diversity population.  Research projects can come from any discipline represented at U of L. It is recommended that all applicants for this grant review the UofL Commission on Diversity and Racial Equality web page for details about CODRE. Interested students who are experiencing difficulty in locating a mentor in their discipline may contact the CODRE Office (852-2029) for assistance.

The Pulitzer Center announces the second edition of Project:Report!

Once again, the Pulitzer Center and YouTube are partnering to give non-professional, aspiring journalists a chance to tell stories that might not otherwise be covered by traditional media. They'll also get to compete for five $10,000 grants to work with the Pulitzer Center on an international reporting project.

 

Red bullet point for lists IREE program Grant - Engineering


The 2010 International Research and Education in Engineering (IREE) Program , sponsored by the National Science Foundation and organized by Purdue University, is now accepting applications for the 2010 grant cycle. IREE 2010 awardees will receive a stipend (US$4,000 for graduate students and US$3,000 for undergraduate students) to conduct engineering-related research in China from May - August 2010 . Additionally, grant awardees will receive allowances for: an orientation program; travel to and housing/meals in China; plus a re-entry program. The 50 students (20 undergraduate and 30 graduate students) that receive the IREE award will spend 10-12 weeks working on frontier engineering research projects in university, industry, or government labs in China.
