Syllabus for Applied Trumpet All trumpeters will study the basics of trumpet playing: tone production, technique, breathing, embouchure, reading, literature and repertoire, according to his/her ability. A certain standard will be established for each year (Freshman, Sophomore, etc.) and for each degree program (BM, BME/MAT, BA, MM, MME) in the trumpet area.
Grading Policy. Each trumpet lesson will be graded. A mid-term exam and a final jury exam will be given. I retain the perogative to move the jury grade up or down by one letter grade. The three grades (average lesson grade, mid-term, and jury) will be averaged, resulting in the semester grade. Grading of the weekly lesson is based in part upon the student's progress (measurable improvement from week to week). However, a standard level of ability for each class year will be reflected in the grading. In addition, the grade will reflect a varying degree of expectation, based upon the student's major (i.e. performance majors will face higher expectations than education majors, and so on). A file will be kept on each student's semester progress, and each student may request to see their grades at any time. A grade of "incomplete" or "I" will be given in the event of extenuating circumstances, such as protracted health problems or similar circumstances. The semester's work and jury will be made up at a later date. I will keep a record of any materials (book/horns/mouthpieces/music, etc.) borrowed from me. The student will sign out the borrowed materials on a log kept in my office. Failure to return all materials by the end of the semester, unless special provision has been cleared through me, will result in the student's grade being withheld until the materials are returned or replaced as necessary.
Attendance Policy. Each trumpet student will be given a one-hour lesson per week (minimum of fiifty-five minutes to allow for student travel time between classes, if needed.) At the beginning of the semester, each student will fill out a schedule form listing their weekly schedule, name, and phone nujber. Lessons will be scheduled on a week-to-week basis, based on both the student's and my schedules, and a weekly schedule will be posted on my door. A semi-permanent schedule will be followed as much as is possible. Each student will receive a minimum of eleven lessons in the course of the semester. I MUST be notified at lease 24 hours in advance if rescheduling or cancellation is necessary (emergencies will be considered on a case-by-case basis), and no-shows without just cause will be treated as an unexcused absence resulting in an "F" for the lesson grade. Tardiness of more than 15 minutes will be treated as a no-show and will not be made up. In addition, I retain the perogative to terminate any lesson for which the student demonstrates inadequate preparation, resulting in an "F" for the lesson grade. Attendance at studio class is mandatory for all trumpet majors. In addition, attendance is required at all faculty brass recitals, brass student degree recitals, and all guest brass recitals/master classes. The private lesson absence policy will apply to the studio class and all required recitals: 24-hour advance notification with just cause, or an "F" will be averaged into the semester grade.
Office Hours. Office hours will be posted each week on my door. In addition, individual meetings may be scheduled at any time by appointment.
Practice Policy. If a student is receiving four hours credit, it is expected that he/she will practice a minimum of three hours every day. For two hours credit, the daily practice requirement is a minimum of one and a half hours. The amount of material covered will vary greatly for each individual, but a basic repertoire guide for all levels can be found at the end of the syllabus. Different types of practice (i.e.problem solving practice vs. rehearsal practice) will be discussed at the individual lesson.
Convocation Policy. Performance on at least one convocation will be required of all full-time students, with the exception of first semester freshmen. All students are encouraged to perform on convocation as many times as they feel prepared to do so during a semester.
Teacher Training. Each student will teach one lesson per semester to a fellow student. The pairings will be made between students of similar abilities. This lesson will replace the regular lesson for the given week, and will be supervised by me. The goal of these "mock lessons" is to help the "teacher" learn to teach, to analyze and offer positive problem-solving suggestions, to learn to verbalize a response to a given playing problem, and to make assignments designed to assist the "student" in improving his/her playing.
Mid-term Exams. The mid-term exam will consist of scales, arpeggios, and sight-reading excerpts commensurate with the student's ability level. The "Accompanist Form" (see below) must be turned in at the exam.
Juries. All trumpeters are expected to take a jury examination at the end of each semester, to be adjudicated by the brass faculty. Students who have given a degree recital are exempt from this requirement. Teacher-assigned repertoire for the jury exam will include one solo with piano accompaniment, and one or two etudes or unaccompanied solos. Students who have given optional (non-degree) recitals will be required to take the jury exam. At the end of the Sophomore year a Sophomore Comprehensive Exam must be performed for the entire School of Music faculty. Teacher-assigned repertoire will include three different solos with piano or organ accompaniment; an unaccompanied solo may be performed as one of the three works. In addition to solo performance requirements, students are strongly encouraged to participate in symphonic band, symphony orchestra, jazz band, brass choir, brass quintet, and trumpet ensemble during their course of study. It is the responsibility of each student to procure the services of an accompanist for the final jury exam and to turn in a copy of the "Accompanist Form", signed by the accompanist and student, by mid-term.
