Student Events Coordinator for the UofL Women’s Center

 

The student events coordinator is a currently enrolled U of L graduate student and is responsible (in conjunction with office staff) in assisting staff for the Women’s Center Feminist Social Justice Living Learning Community (LLC).  This involves helping to plan and market programs for the LLC. These projects may include current programs such as social events, conferences, lectures, and discussion groups.  The student coordinator will be responsible for assisting with the well-being of the LLC members and assisting with monthly meetings and other community activities.  

As a member of the Women Center Staff, the Student Coordinator may work directly with staff and students on existing Women’s Center programs such as the WC five student groups' programs and projects. (The groups include: American Association of University Women (AAUW), U of L; Student Parent Association (SPA); Women 4 Women Student Board; United Nations Association (UNA) Women at U of L; and U of L Women’s Student Veteran Support Group.

The Student Coordinator will also assist with Women’s Center signature events and initiatives including: the Kentucky Women’s Book Festival; the annual Women’s Empowerment Luncheon and the Tampon Task Force committee by serving on the planning committees and/or providing research.

As a member of the University community, the coordinator will utilize existing Women Center alliances and build new alliances on campus with academic departments, diversity offices, and student involvement offices, particularly the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Department who is a co-sponsor of the LLC. Past involvement included; the Cultural Center, LGBT Center, International Center, Office of Student Involvement, the PEACC Program, Student Activities Board, Student Government Association, and the Resident Student Association. The coordinator is welcome, however, to develop working relationships with other on-campus and community organizations.

Additional responsibilities include researching Women Center projects; being available to serve as an advocate for women students by responding to their needs and collaborating with the other members of the Women’s Center staff on special projects.

The ideal candidate for this position is a well-organized self-starter with excellent communication and organizational skills.  Proficiency in the use of social networking media such as Facebook & Instagram, developing programs and other marketing skills (i.e. designing flyers for programs and initiatives); an advanced stage of developing feminist sensibilities—from curious about some aspect of women’s issues to passionately committed to women’s equality. Strong facilitation and project management skills are required. Duties will include some evening and occasional weekend hours to supervise student meetings and events if applicable.

This position is approximately, 10 hours per week, starting wage $10.00 per hour, and is designed for a UofL student who would appreciate the opportunity to work in a setting that reflects an interest in women’s issues. The position offers the possibility of applying skills in management, leadership and creating programs for the university community.
