Successful launch of Champions 4 Her Walk, Run & Festival with Mayor Jerry Abramson

Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson recently joined Women 4 Women and our beneficiary partners to launch the start of Champions 4 Her Walk, Run, & Festival, a new event in June that will bring ten local organizations together in the common goal of raising both funds and morale for the issues facing today’s area women and girls. Teams and individuals will be able to participate in a 5K Walk, Run and enjoy a festival at Waterfront Park after finishing.

  The partners include:

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana
  • The Center for Women & Families
  • Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana
  • Maryhurst
  • Mom’s Closet Resource Center
  • Project Women
  • University of Louisville Women’s Athletics
  • University of Louisville Women’s Center
  • West Louisville Girls Choir
  • Women 4 Women

Initial financial support for the event is being provided through a $50,000 grant from the Gheens Foundation. WAVE-TV and Today’s Woman are providing media support to help promote the event as well. Additional sponsors and media partners are currently being sought.

“I applaud the effort of Women 4 Women and the participating organizations,” said Mayor Abramson. “This type of public collaboration and initiative is exactly what Louisville needs to achieve our goal of becoming a Healthy Hometown.”

“In our quest to build a City of Champions, Champions 4 Her represents a groundbreaking formula which will not only benefit these ten wonderful organizations – but will also benefit the entire area as well,” said Ann L. Coffey, President and CEO of Women 4 Women. “We truly hope that this event, which will add exciting elements each year such as sports clinics, a music festival, public art, will create an opportunity for everyone to play a part in creating a hometown that becomes one of the best places for girls, women and their families to live and work.”

The idea for a collaborative event grew out of the 2005 Louisville Women’s Summit co-hosted by Women 4 Women and the Louisville Metro Office for Women, and sponsored by Norton Women’s Pavilion. Staff and volunteers from each of the ten benefiting organizations will all participate in the planning, preparation and management of the event that will occur on June 21, 2008.

With the help of Mayor Jerry Abramson, Women 4 Women launched Champions 4 Her Walk, Run & Festival, the new event will bring together ten nonprofit organizations to raise money and awareness for women’s and girls’ causes.
