Robin Harris - June 21, 2008

As the Public Services Librarian at the School of Law, Robin Harris oversees circulation, reference and reserve, and conducts library classes and tours. But those are not all of her contributions.

She holds a B.A. and M.A. in English from the University of Louisville and an 

M.A. in Library Science from the University of Kentucky.  She has worked in academic libraries for 22 years in positions including Instructional Services Librarian at Jefferson Community College, College of Business Library Liaison at U of L, and Reference Librarian at U of L’s Ekstrom Library.

For the past several years she has chaired the Law School’s very active Diversity Committee and has represented the Law School on many University boards and committees, including the Athletic Association Board of Directors (6 years), the Faculty Senate Planning & Budget Committee (10 years), the President’s Planning Advisory Committee (2 Years), and the President’s Commission on Diversity and Racial Equality (3 years).  From 2002-2004 she served as chair of the President’s Commission on the Status of Women after serving a two-year term as Vice Chair.  During the 2006-2007 AY, she served on the Provost’s Strategic Planning Steering Committee.

 

Professor Harris was elected to Beta Phi Mu Honor Society and belongs to several professional organizations including the American Association of Law Libraries and the Kentucky Library Association, serving as Editor of the KLA journal.

On campus, Robin is active in issues related to women and diversity and has enjoyed volunteering for the Women’s Center through which the goals of equality and women’s self-reliance are encouraged.  In addition to being a member of the University of Louisville Women’s Center Newsletter Editorial Board, she was one of the founders of the Kentucky Women’s Book Festival, which features female Kentucky authors offering workshops and discussions on the realities of writing.  According to Robin, “If you are really involved, you get to experience the diversity that is U of L.”

Robin received the President’s Distinguished Service Award for service to the University and the community (1999), the Brandeis Faculty Diversity Award (2001), and the President’s Distinguished Faculty Award for service to the University in 2006.  She is a woman of accomplishment and inspiration…..a true Champion 4 Her.
