Chris Davis - May 27, 2008
Chris Davis has served as the University of Louisville’s director of visitor information since 1999, a job that’s brought her face to face with thousands of visitors to Belknap Campus over the years.
Last year, more than 60,000 people came knocking at UofL’s two visitor information centers, either through the centers’ drive-through windows, as walk-ins or via phone calls. If that weren’t enough, Davis and her student employees also gave 600 campus tours last year for some 7,600 people, many of whom were prospective UofL students. Their work consistently draws high praise from people on and off campus.
Sometimes people who come to the centers for assistance are lost or confused. Occasionally, they can be downright cranky. Davis takes it all in stride, delivering polite and efficient service to even the most frustrated visitors.
A single mother with one daughter, Brooke, studying at the University of Kentucky and another, Audrey, at Noe Middle School, Davis is an excellent role model for those trying to balance work and life. She prides herself on helping others, a talent she has passed on to her daughters and to dozens of student employees she has supervised over the years.
Besides recruiting, hiring and training all of the students who work at her centers, Davis also functions as their "second Mom." She listens to their problems, encourages them and leads them by example. Many of her student employees stay in touch with her even after they graduate, keeping her posted on developments in their lives, their jobs and their families.
In 2002, the visitor information centers won a disability awareness award for showing a keen sensitivity to the needs of disabled UofL employees and visitors.
Davis is a veteran member of UofL’s Parking Advisory Committee and recently coordinated an initiative with Speed Museum, Churchill Downs and other neighborhood groups that led to a recommendation for a UofL faculty and staff community service day.
She has done volunteer work for UofL’s Women’s Center and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, has taken part in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk and is currently serving as co-parent for Noe Middle School’s hockey program.
Davis is a wonderful example of a woman whose ongoing hard work and commitment to helping people inspires others and makes UofL a true asset to the Louisville community. She is a Champion4Her.
