Dr. Beth Bonham - May 13, 2008

School of Nursing professor Dr. Elizabeth Bonham has dedicated much of her life to helping young men and women in trouble.

Beth BonhamDr. Beth Bohnam's specialty is Child/Adolescent Psychiatric-Mental Health, and she uses this knowledge to work with juvenile offenders.

“I have a genuine regard for people and what psychiatry brings to the table,” said Bonham.

During her practice in the 90’s, Bonham developed a home-based, psychotherapeutic program for adjudicated Indiana youth and their families.

She encouraged parents to take a role in helping their children, and worked with them to find solutions.

“My philosophy of life is that we have to ask people what they want. We helped families and kids come up with a variety of tools they could use to overcome difficulties” said Bonham.

Bonham joined the University of Louisville in 2006 because of the research opportunities here. This summer she’ll be talking with juvenile offenders at the Youth Detention Services Center in Louisville, asking them questions about what they think led to their problems.

“Many of the kids are just so sad, and they really had a bum start. I’m floored by how adults hurt children,” said Bonham.

Bonham plans to use her research to build on theories and possibly develop application to help youth better deal with mental health problems.

Dr. Elizabeth Bonham is making a difference for young men, women, dads and moms.

Thanks Dr. Bonham, for being a Champion for Her.
