Largest gift to UofL to benefit cancer center

Cancer care and research at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center at UofL will receive a $20 million boost during the next five years, thanks to a commitment announced today from the James Graham Brown Foundation. “This gift is momentous not only because of its magnitude but also because of the history of the James Graham Brown Foundation’s commitment to the vision for a world-class cancer center at the University of Louisville – one that we are achieving with the tremendous support of our community. But, perhaps more importantly, it is significant because of the hope it provides to the people of our state and region who are fighting this terrible disease,” UofL President James Ramsey said. UofL professor writes guide to conquering nasty bug

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology made headlines this month with a report that a virulent, drug-resistant intestinal bacterium (C. difficile) is up to 20 times more common than previously thought. The bug causes potentially deadly diarrhea, especially in older and sick people, and is commonly found in hospital and other health care settings. Ruth Carrico, assistant professor in UofL’s School of Public Health and Information Sciences, led the team responsible for the association’s guide to reducing chances of infection, often tied to antibiotic overuse and improperly cleaned hospital rooms. For details, call Carrico at 502-852-3992 or see press resources from APIC.

Hundreds at UofL take energy-saving pledge

So far more than 600 UofL faculty, staff and students have pledged to trim their energy use by 10 percent through a project created by Partnership for a Green City, a joint venture of UofL, Louisville Metro Government and Jefferson County Public Schools. More than 1,000 people at all three organizations have signed the pledge, which is available online and also available in paper form. The deadline for signing up is Dec. 7, said Brent Fryrear, director of the partnership. For more details, contact Fryrear at 502-852-8854 or e-mail Brent.
