UofL College of Education receives $3.1 million NSF grant

The University of Louisville College of Education and Human Development has received a $3.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to develop assessments that will predict teacher performance and student achievement in geometry.

The three-year grant began Oct. 1. UofL will be the lead institution and will partner with the University of Kentucky, Florida State University, Alpine Testing Solutions and Horizon Research Associates.

Bill Bush, director of the UofL Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Teacher Development and a professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, is the principal investigator for the project. The UofL team will include 12 educators including UofL faculty and graduate students and representatives from Jefferson County Public Schools.

“There aren’t a lot of predictive measures for determining how well teachers will teach,” Bush said. “Our goal is to better identify the knowledge that teachers need to do their work and to better prepare future teachers while they are in college.”

Some work already has begun. The UofL team has begun reviewing high school geometry books. The UK and FSU teams are reviewing college geometry books and geometry standards, respectively. Future work will include videotaping Louisville-area math teachers to see how they use their mathematics knowledge to teach geometry and using the information gathered to write tests that more effectively measure that knowledge.

“These assessments will be useful to teacher educators and professional development providers in evaluating their programs and in assisting mathematics teachers to gain relevant knowledge for teaching geometry,” Bush said.

Brief recap on the federal investigation

First, the federal investigation continues.

  • The University of Louisville brought this information to the federal authorities
  • We continue to work with the federal agencies on this investigation and look forward to its conclusion
  • Any other questions should be directed to David Huber, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky

Our internal reviews continue. We have six processes currently underway. All of the reviews are proceeding, but none are at a point where we can discuss the findings.

We do expect the internal audit of the finances of the College and the external audit of the university’s grants management and contracts practices to be completed later this month.

At that point, the information will be shared with university officials. We expect to be able to announce the findings and steps we will take to address them by mid-November.
