Top HeadlinesUPDATED Oct. 2, 3 p.m.UofL administration announces creation of faculty ombuds officeAdministration announced Oct. 2 that it will set up an interim Ombuds office while a Faculty Senate group reviews the university's faculty grievance processes. The office will be similar to those at other major universities. It will not serve an advocacy function, but will work impartially to help clarify, resolve and expedite alleviation of concerns and to create a safe, fair and equitable resource to faculty who require assistance. The office will report to the provost for administrative and budgetary purposes, but will serve an independent function. Full details will be announced next week. Full story Spiffing up campusRenovation of the main entrance to UofL – the Oval Commons – is nearly complete. Repaving of the stretch of Third Street in front of campus is finished, and all that remains is to install fountains and landscaping. The $1.2 million overhaul includes new brick paving in an argyle pattern of black and red. The project, funded with a Kentucky Transportation Department grant, was redesigned to improve traffic flow and air quality. For more details, see http://php.louisville.edu/news/news.php?news=1189 University to offer public update on biosafety labUofL Executive Vice President for Research Manuel Martinez-Maldonado will lead a team of university experts who will offer a public update Thursday, Oct. 2, on the Center for Predictive Medicine. Work is nearly complete on the $34.6 million Level 3 biosafety lab, which is scheduled to open spring 2009 on UofL's Shelby Campus. The public forum, open to the entire community, will begin at 6 p.m. in 218A-B, Founders Union Building. David Boren, current University of Oklahoma president, former Oklahoma governor and author of “A Letter to America,” Oct. 6 at The Kentucky Center. Boren will be interviewed by award-winning journalist Neal Conan, host of “Talk of the Nation” on National Public Radio. The interview features an hourlong discussion between the two.
