Teach-in to focus on global warming

To help people understand how global warming affects us all, UofL will participate in a national global warming teach-in on Thursday, Feb. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than a dozen environmental experts will speak and various departments at UofL will offer lectures, workshops and a tour of the university’s steam and chilled-water plant. To see all local events, go to partnershipforagreencity.org or contact Elizabeth Haywood at 502-541-2793 or e-mail Elizabeth Haywood.

Bike and walk organized to promote teach-in

Organizers of Thursday’s global warming teach-in also are inviting faculty, staff and the public to join in a half-mile bike ride and walk tomorrow on UofL’ss Belknap Campus. The goal is to round up 350 cyclists or walkers for the event, said faculty member Russ Barnett. Scientists have reported that the amount of carbon dioxide in the earth’ss atmosphere must drop from 384 parts per million to 350 parts per million to begin reversing global warming, he said. The bike and walk will begin at The Thinker in front of Grawemeyer Hall at 11 a.m. Contact Russ Barnett, 502-852-1851 or e-mail Russ Barnett.

Local students to get free dental care Friday

Tough economic times mean more elementary and middle school students are taking advantage of free dental care through the Smile Kentucky! program. Over 300 children from Jefferson and surrounding counties will visit the UofL School of Dentistry Friday Feb. 6 for oral treatment.
