Scholar House opens today

Louisville Scholar House had its grand opening this morning. The residential complex, located at Fifth and Bloom streets, is a partnership among the Family Scholar House (formerly Project Women), Kentucky Housing Corp. and UofL. The 56-unit development will provide housing for single mothers trying to earn their college degrees at UofL and other local colleges and universities.

Islamic scholars arrive to explore peace among faiths

More international visitors will arrive in Louisville this month, but these have nothing to do with Ryder Cup golf. Ten Islamic scholars from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India will visit here, New York City and Washington, D.C., Oct. 12-25 through a UofL exchange program intended to broaden interreligious understanding. The U.S. State Department funds the program, “Religion and Society: A Dialogue.” UofL humanities professor Riffat Hassan leads the exchanges here and to those South Asian countries.

What, me worry?

Mothers worry; that’s a given. But moms who suffer from excessive and uncontrollable worry may have generalized anxiety disorder, which is more common among women than men. And this disparity also occurs in children. UofL’s Healthy Parents-Healthy Kids Research Laboratory is launching a study to find out why. The lab helps parents identify stressors that worry them and their children and figure out ways to reduce their anxiety. The lab offers free, confidential assessments and treatment referrals.
