General overview of the web content management system at UofL.

The purpose of UofL's web content management system (CMS) is to simplify web publishing. Our goal is to make web publishing as simple as managing your e-mail. A web content management system will allow us to:

  • Empower non-technical staff and faculty to write, edit, and manage Web content.
  • Publish information to public-facing Web sites, create intranets, and dynamically format information for alternate viewers such as cell phones and wireless devices.
  • Dynamically update Web sites.
  • Provide a centralized set of Web products that everyone can use.
  • More easily safeguard data.
  • Achieve a consistent look-and-feel.

In addition to these obvious features, a CMS can allow us to:

  • Improve site usability.
  • Make it easier to post content that is within Section 508 and WAI accessibility guidelines.
  • Save everyone time and money by maintaining a centralized, reusable set of web-based tools.

You can request a CMS site for your unit or department at http://louisville.edu/web/tools/site-requests

The University's current CMS platform is Plone 3.1.  Plone is a content management system (CMS) which you can use to build a web site. With Plone, ordinary people can contribute content to a web site without the help of a computer geek. Plone runs over the Web, too, so you don’t need to install any special software on your computer.
