THE MAGAZINE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE
WINTER 2001 / VOL. 19, NO. 2

From inner-city tutors in the United States to nurse volunteers in India, U of L's alumni, staff and students are helping make the world a better place.

U of L's faculty, staff, students and alumni have a long-standing tradition of volunteer service not just to the local community, but to the world.

And the rewards are many.

Faculty and staff reap the benefits of helping students become involved with community service programs. Students are enlightened by their beyond-the-classroom experience. Alumni get to share what they learned at U of L in a way that drives home just how important an education can be-and reinforces just how lucky those of us are who have had the opportunity to earn a college degree.

The results are even more important. An illiterate adult learns to read. A child in Appalachia is immunized.

A baby in Bombay is fed.

"U of L has long been service-oriented," says President John Shumaker. "We place high value on putting knowledge to work to serve the metropolitan area as well as our national and international communities.

"Our alumni demonstrate the service ethic they gained at U of L every day," he adds. "Our faculty and staff are equally generous sharing their time and wisdom. Students have always been good volunteers, as well.

"We're especially focused on linking student service to academic work, encouraging students to apply what they learn in the classroom to relevant volunteer situations. Through service learning, students gain valuable professional skills while communities benefit from their work.

"Everyone wins."
