Alumni Association Awards

The Alumni Association sponsors a number of awards programs that recognize the accomplishments of U of L alumni and of those individuals who contributed to the success of our alumni.

Red Apple Award

It’s never too late to give your professor an apple. You may never have done so while attending U of L, but through the Alumni Association’s Red Apple Award you can finally thank your favorite U of L educator. If there was someone who had an impact on your education or career because of his or her profound teaching ability, please let us know. Eligible faculty for nomination must either currently teach at U of L or be retired from U of L. Entry deadline is August 30.

A Week of Work and Fun

Lots of college students head to Florida during spring break to lay on the beach and get away from the grind. When a group of U of L faculty, students, and staff headed for the Sunshine State in April, it was more than a pleasure trip. They spent the week working with at-risk children at the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation and Golf Course in Clearwater, Florida. The foundation serves as the site for several programs for at-risk youth and uses golf as a way to foster self esteem and discipline. The group of 15 U of L students performed improvisational skits that told life lessons, including the dangers of drug use and coping with peer pressure. Through the Alternative Spring Break program, students get course credit and the chance to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real life volunteer work. U of L’s Office of Alumni Relations and the Tampa Bay Alumni Club helped to support the effort.

Wilson Named Alumna of the Year

During the 1998 Commencement exercises, Elizabeth Arterburn Wilson ’24A, ’38G was honored with the U of L Alumna of the Year Award. The Louisville native received a bachelor’s degree in 1924, a master’s in sociology in 1938, and a two-year certificate in social work in a program affiliated with U of L before the Kent School of Social Work was formed. Wilson has spent a lifetime serving the community, both locally and abroad. She was instrumental in establishing a theater company that would become the Louisville Children’s Community Theatre, now known as Stage One. In 1939, she was named to the Mayor’s Military Affairs Committee, which created the Louisville Service- man’s Club. Active during World War II, the club became the model for national USO clubs. In 1946, Wilson traveled to Germany at the request of the American Red Cross, where she worked for the High Commission of Germany and the United States Information Agency. She also helped to establish programs for German youth.

Unit Associations

Kent School of Social Work
The Kent Alumni Association gave warm welcome to the school’s new dean, Terry L. Singer, during the annual homecoming breakfast last October. Singer says he is impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication of the Kent alumni to such projects as mentoring, awards selection, and donor recognition.

Speed Scientific School
Whether it’s cheering on students during Engineers’ Days, participating in reunions, or promoting alumni scholarships, the Speed School Alumni Association takes an active role in alumni relations. Plans for the 1998-99 academic year include the establishment of an alumni mentoring program for engineering students.

School of Music
Reunion fever is in the air! Alumni and faculty from 1947 through 1970 will gather on October 16 and 17, 1998, for the first ever Gardencourt reunion. Plans include a reception at the University Club, convocation and dinner at the Brown Hotel, and tours of the School of Music.

Regional Alumni Club News

Spring always seems to be full of activities for the Alumni Association’s regional alumni clubs. Currently, the university has 31 regional clubs serving communities outside the Louisville metropolitan area. These clubs continue to strengthen their connection to the University of Louisville by providing a wide variety of opportunities and events for alumni and friends. Club members provide the institution with ambassadors, proud supporters, and a network of individuals who can reflect their positive relationship with U of L. Those who participate in club activities are provided with entertainment, information, special events, and lifetime friendships. Not only are these alumni volunteers important in their efforts to develop connections with other alumni, they are also key players in the effort to make U of L a premier metropolitan research institution.

The North Florida Alumni Club hosted Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations Tara Singer for a steering committee dinner in April. Singer entertained questions about the happenings at U of L and provided an outlook for the university’s future. The club also celebrated the 124th running of the Kentucky Derby at the home of club president Steven Green ’76B.

The Atlanta Alumni Club recently sponsored a night out at the theater. According to club president Brant Stevens ’78B, nearly 30 people attended the event. In May, the club held its annual Derby event, in traditional fashion, at the home of Karen Simon.

The Owensboro/Green River Alumni Club, currently headed by Tom Meyer ’71L, is making plans to hold a network night at which club members and other local alumni can exchange business cards and make contacts with their fellow alumni. This club recently awarded a scholarship to J. D. Meyer, a third-year law student from Owensboro.

The Elizabethtown/Greater Heartland Alumni Club is gearing up to celebrate the university’s Bicentennial. Club president Tex Bradford ’43D and other club members are looking forward to this event, which will feature a presentation of the university’s Bicentennial video. The club also held a standing room only admissions recruitment open house in February.

The Lake Cumberland Alumni Club will play host to Football Coach John L. Smith at Lake Cumberland State Park in June. Club president Kim Reynolds ’69K says this event will be part of the club’s Bicentennial celebration. The club also recently hosted a successful admissions recruitment open house.

The Charlotte Area Alumni Club is on its way to obtaining an official club charter. The club has elected Hoang Druin ’95D as president, and has formed a stable steering committee group. The club held a Derby party at the Charlotte Mint Museum and will hold its chartering activities on July 11.

If you reside in one of the above club areas, which generally cover a 50-mile radius of the city noted, please continue your support of the club and its activities. Newcomers are always welcome, so please plan to join this summer if you have not been able to in the past or if you have just moved to the area. Membership invitations go out in July. For more information about regional alumni clubs, contact Eric Wright at (800) 813-8635.
