Destination U of L!Tens of thousands of people visit the University of Louisville each year, especially during the busy fall semester when scores of alumni return to their alma mater for homecoming events or football fanatics descend on the area to catch a game at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. But it’s not just university alumni and sports fans who are finding reasons to venture over to campus. Yes, the university is known for its research, its teaching and, of course, its athletics programs. But more and more people are finding that U of L can be a fascinating place to visit.
It's a Cultural meccaU of L is home to three art galleries, the Speed Art Museum and one of the original castings of Rodin’s The Thinker on the front steps of Grawemeyer Hall. The university also hosts hundreds of concerts, plays, exhibits and other events throughout the year, including the internationally renowned Jazz Week and New Music Festival celebrations at our School of Music. It's a park.U of L is home to a huge variety of some of the biggest and oldest trees in Louisville as well as lush lawns and a family of rare white squirrels. The compact Belknap Campus is a walker’s paradise offering a cardio path around Cardinal Park, as well as huge, shaded sidewalks throughout campus.
It's a historical site.The ashes of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis are buried under the portico of the law school that bears his name. The Oval is home to a cannon donated in honor of U of L alumnus Civil War Gen. John Logan, the founder of Memorial Day. It's a sports centerU of L’s Cardinal Park is regarded as one of the nation’s outstanding athletics facilities, boasting first-rate softball, track and field, soccer and field hockey venues that host many high school and college championship events. Our Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium and Jim Patterson Stadium are state-of-the-art football and baseball facilities, respectively. It's a family place.Cardinal Park also features basketball and sand volleyball courts and a playground stuffed with equipment appropriate for all children, including those with special needs.
