Multiplier Effect
Few leaders in academic medicine have made a greater impact on the practice of surgery than Dr. Hiram Polk Jr., chairman of the University of Louisville's surgery department since 1971. Polk will retire in June after leading the department from a staff of five and almost no research funding into a dynamic collection of more than 70 faculty surgeons with $5 million in annual research grants.
