Kristanne Harden
"This scholarship has made wonderful things happen"
Kristanne Harden, a U of L music major entering her senior year, began playing the violin at the age of 7 back home in Wilmore, Ky. Now, thanks in large part to the Irene L. Dunham Scholarship, Harden is not only playing first violin in the university's orchestra, but for the second consecutive year she was able to spend part of the summer in France through an exchange program.
Since Harden had taken private violin lessons with a professor from the School of Music, U of L was already foremost in her mind when the time came to select a college or university.
However, after graduating from Jessamine County High School she was considering a couple of options that would have taken her elsewhere for her undergraduate education.
Then the scholarship offer came from U of L and she quickly made up her mind to come to Louisville.
"Just not having that financial pressure has been wonderful," she says. "While at U of L I've worked at the music library while attending school but I really did that for experience and not because I needed the extra money."
Harden received an award of $2,400 for two consecutive academic years from the Irene L. Dunham Scholarship Fund, established in 1994 by Dunham's daughter, Joan McCombs.
"My mother's love of music was passed down to me," McCombs says about her decision to establish the scholarship fund. "After her death, I decided that this would be a wonderful reminder of that love of music."
"College at U of L has been great," Harden says. "Mrs. McCombs' scholarship has helped make some wonderful things happen for me."
