Archives: Dr. Thomas Lee Settle—The Virginian

A defining moment in the troubled years that led to the American Civil War, John Brown was hanged in 1859 as a traitor to the government after leading a group of men in a revolt at Harper’s Ferry. Dr. Thomas Lee Settle—a graduate of the Kentucky School of Medicine, which was precursor to U of L’s School of Medicine—pronounced Brown dead. Fellow U of L graduate and Virginian Dave Goetz tells the story of this Civil War surgeon.
