Showcase Your Academic Work At Congress for New Urbanism (CNU) 21

The planning for CNU 21 is in full swing. We are writing you today to invite you to submit an academic paper or serve as a reviewer for the 2013 Call for New Urban Research.

This year, the theme is the concept of "Tactical Urbanism: Temporary Projects and Urban Activism." Papers should focus on real-life examples demonstrating the feasibility - or lack of practicality - of projects motivated by activism rather than politics. The intention is to deliver a summary of academic investigations exploring the appropriation of cities and the current change(s) in the culture of planning, including the intrusions of small-scale, and perhaps, small-life span projects.

Highest priority will be given to the following topics: art in public spaces, urban repair, temporary interventions, land use fluctuations and utilization cycles, guerrilla urbanism and squatting, homelessness, ethnic sub-cultures, economic reform, land use re-interpretations, creative/temporary development proposals, new lifestyles, lack or excess of security, urban abandonment/shrinkage, aesthetic value of time, urban design theories or methodologies, and creative means of urban transportation.

The deadline for paper submissions is December 14th, 2012. Final selection will be based on the paper's depth of content, demonstration of methodological rigor, contribution and advancement to the topic of the year, and overall significance to the practice of New Urbanism.

If you are interested in submitting research, please email your paper to callforpapers@cnu.org on or before December 14, 2012.

If you are interested in serving as a reviewer, please send a short description of your expertise to callforpapers@cnu.org. Reviewers should be familiar with New Urbanist projects and issues and be willing to review submitted papers at the end of December 2012.

For more information on how to submit or get involved as a reviewer, please visit cnu.org/nuresearch. Please feel to forward this email to others who may be interested, and for any questions not answered here, please email callforpapers@cnu.org.

We hope to see you next year at CNU 21: Living Community, May 29th-June 1st, 2013 in Salt Lake City, UT.

EPA Competition: Campus RainWorks Challenge

Campus RainWorks challenges college students to design innovative stormwater management projects for their campus to raise awareness of green design.

http://challenge.gov/epa/364-campus-rainworks

About the Challenge

EPA’s Campus RainWorks Challenge is a competition for college and university students intended to engage the next generation of urban planners, designers, and engineers in the development of integrated, green solutions to our nation’s growing water infrastructure needs.

Every time it rains, urban stormwater carries bacteria, nutrients, heavy metals, and other pollutants into our nation’s waters - affecting tens of thousands of miles of rivers, streams, and coastal shorelines as well as hundreds of thousands of acres of lakes, reservoirs, and ponds.  At the same time, growing urban areas and shifting climate patterns are increasing the risk of both floods and droughts.

EPA encourages the use of green infrastructure to help manage stormwater and address related water resource challenges. Green infrastructure uses vegetation, soils, and natural processes to manage stormwater at its source and provide other community benefits. The Campus RainWorks Challenge invites student teams, working with a faculty advisor, to design an innovative green infrastructure project for their campus.

This challenge includes a total of $46,000 in prizes. (that’s for two prizes of $23,000 each)

Registration for the Campus RainWorks Challenge opens September 4, 2012.  Entry submittal deadline is December 14, 2012.

Read more about eligibility requirements and how to register.
