Study shows links between smoking bans, reduced risk of heart disease

University of Louisville researcher and director of the Diabetes and Obesity Center, Aruni Bhatnagar, Ph.D., was part of a national Institute of Medicine panel that reported on Oct. 15 that smoking bans are effective at reducing the risk of heart attacks and heart disease associated with exposure to secondhand smoke.

Tammy Lawson named Friend of SHARE for work with employee aid program

University of Louisville Campus Tour Coordinator Tammy Lawson learned to help people from her mother. As a high school student, she rode TARC from school to the Brown Hotel two days a week to volunteer at the Clothes Closet, a program that later became the Jefferson County Public Schools Clothing Assistance Program. Her mother was the program's volunteer director for 35 years.

Medical librarian pens opera about boxing legend Joe Louis

Not everyone would see a connection between opera and boxing, but University of Louisville medical librarian John Chenault does. The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and the University of Maryland School of Music commissioned Chenault and his long-time collaborator Frank Proto to write an opera on the life of legendary boxer Joe Louis. It will premier April 17, 2010 at the Maryland Opera Studio.
