Wayne Hall

As much as these titles describe and apply to the work that happens at the University of Louisville, they don’t get to the essence of what makes UofL unique — its people.

Once or twice a month, UofL Today profiles people who help to make the university what it is.

Name: Wayne Hall

UofL title and department: director of public safety

At UofL since: August 1991

In current post since: October 1997

Hometown: Dothan, Ala.

First job and what I learned from it: My first job was in construction. It taught me a work ethic that I have lived by during my time in the Marine Corp and law enforcement.

The thing I like most about what I do: working with the men and women in the Department of Public Safety. They truly care about the university community. It is gratifying to see how dedicated they are to serving it.

I am: a husband and father. My wife and daughter are the loves of my life.

I never: tire of a warm breeze and a beautiful beach.

Guilty pleasure: A chocolate-covered honey bun from Nord’s Bakery.

Favorite book: I love to read. I especially like biographies. My favorite book is “The Last Coach, A Life of Paul Bear Bryant.”

Favorite TV show: “Dirty Jobs.” It makes me appreciate mine.

In the car I listen to: The oldies and Jimmy Buffett. My wife says I’m a dinosaur.

Favorite quote: John Wayne’s “A man ought to do what he thinks is right.” If you can look yourself in the mirror and feel good about yourself, you made the right decision.

These animals share my world: I currently share my daughter’s two terriers.

My day begins: by checking my Blackberry. Phone calls get through the fog of sleep. E-mails are quite and wait till morning.

I wish I had more time to: spend with my daughter. Between our jobs there is little time.

When I’m not cheering for the Cards, I’m cheering for: the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide.

Most Friday nights you’ll find me: sitting with my wife in the porch swing after dinner. It’s amazing the crazy ideas we can come up with.

If my life were a movie: I would finally go home to Florida after being a castaway in Kentucky for 41 years. No more snow or ice.

Anything else you’d like the UofL community to know: I am blessed with a spouse who has loved and supported me unconditionally. Mary and I have been married for nearly 44 years. We are the proud parents of two children. Christy is a respiratory therapist in Louisville. Michael passed away in 1982 at the age of 4.
