Satellite office opens at HSC
Five service offices typically associated with Belknap Campus now have a satellite presence at the Health Sciences Center, saving travel time for faculty, staff and students who use them, and supporting UofL’s commitment to integrating sustainability in the management of resources and facilities.
The Career Development Center, School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies, International Student and Scholar Services Center, Writing Center and Women’s Center share Suite 120 in the Instructional Building on a rotating basis.
The offices provide educational, career development, and distinctive cultural opportunities to all faculty, staff and students free of charge. People are encouraged to call and make an appointment, but may drop by during hours of operation.

The impetus to bring these services to HSC came when Thomas Geoghegan, associate dean for graduate and postdoctoral affairs for the School of Medicine, saw a disparity between the campuses in terms of services for students enrolled in graduate programs.
It was especially difficult for international students without driver’s licenses to access services at the International Center, Geoghegan said. He worked with Judy Hollkamp, Integrated Programs in Biomedical Sciences, to arrange facilities. The initiative now accommodates not just international students , but other students, faculty and staff.
An open house welcoming students and employees to meet the staff from the satellite office took place April 25.
One of those in attendance, Valerie Casey, interim director of the Women’s Center, said she is excited about the possibility of making the services and resources from the Women’s Center’s available to people at HSC with a more formal presence.
“The excitement people expressed with our new presence on HSC is shared by our staff, who are looking forward to offering services and programs,” Casey said.
