University of Louisville President James Ramsey’s car is going to need an oil change and maybe even a set of new tires by mid-October.

Ramsey, several researchers and members of the admissions and alumni staff have begun UofL’s 2009 outreach program, a road trip that’s taking them to practically every corner of Kentucky.

The group’s 16 stops include visits to some 10 high schools in the eastern, western and central parts of the state.

The tour began Sept. 18 with visits to Shelby County and Western Hills high schools. Ramsey spoke to several hundred juniors, seniors and advanced placement students at each school, telling them UofL is recruiting students based on quality instead of quantity.

He also talked about UofL’s Top 100-ranked library, nationally recognized schools of business, engineering, education and medicine, and other outstanding programs.

Joining Ramsey on stops in Franklin and Shelby counties was Jason Chesney, who discussed with students his groundbreaking cancer research. Later in the day, UofL leaders attended a luncheon in Frankfort with alumni and prospective students.

Another alumni event, one for the Central Kentucky Alumni Club, was scheduled in Lexington the evening before the UofL-University of Kentucky football game.

Other stops on the tour include:

  • Sept. 23 - Nelson County and Bardstown high schools, Bardstown Rotary, Optimist and Kiwanis clubs, and an alumni and student recruitment event in Lebanon
  • Sept. 24 - Meade and Breckinridge county high schools, alumni lunch in Owensboro, alumni event in Madisonville
  • Sept. 30 - Murray and Graves county high schools, Paducah Rotary Club, alumni event in Paducah
  • Oct. 1 - Admission outreach in Wilder
  • Oct. 23 – Counselors’ lunch, Cooper High School visit in Union, alumni event in Covington
  • Oct. 26 - Admissions outreach in Prestonsburg
  • Nov. 6 - Ashland alumni event
  • Dec. 3 - Louisville school visits
