North entrance construction to cause road closures

by John Drees, communications and marketing last modified Jun 04, 2012 02:03 PM

Construction of a new signature entrance to the north end of Belknap Campus will cause some traffic delays beginning Wednesday, June 6, and lasting through July.

The north entrance to Belknap Campus will be converted to a “signature” entrance similar to the project completed last year on Third Street in front of Grawemeyer Hall. The new entrance will include pavers, fountains and signs designed to enhance that side of campus.

“The new entrance will dramatically improve the appearance of the north end,” said Kathleen Smith, chief of staff for President James Ramsey. “Unfortunately, we have to make a bit of a mess during the early stages of construction. But our campus community will be pleased with the final product.”

Beginning Wednesday, June 6, Cardinal Boulevard’s two eastbound lanes will be closed for construction, and the westbound lanes will be converted for two-way traffic. First Street’s southbound lanes also will be closed, and the northbound lanes converted so all traffic into and out of campus will be on the eastern side of the street.

Sidewalks along Cardinal and First Street will be closed at the corners.

In early July, those streets will be reopened, and the northbound lanes on First Street and westbound lanes on Cardinal will be closed for the second half of construction.

All lanes should be reopened and the project completed by mid-August. UofL Today will provide construction updates throughout the project.
