Fitness facility offers employees more options, longer hours
A new fitness facility soon will allow UofL employees to step-up their workouts and find more ways to improve and maintain their overall health and well-being.
Get Healthy Now is renovating and will open the Humana Gym on Bradley Avenue for use in April.
Patrons who are familiar with the Crawford Gym facility can expect more room in the new facility, and that means more — and a larger variety — of cardio and strength equipment. The new space also has an indoor walking/running track, lockers and room for group fitness classes. GHN also is planning to add more wellness classes and initiatives. The Humana Gym will have expanded weekday hours — 6 a.m. to 9 P.m. Monday through Friday — and it will be open on weekends — Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Onsite parking also is available, but the site is close enough to campus that emploees can walk or ride a bicycle to it.
The Great Places to Work Health and Wellness Committee was instrumental in helping to secure the new facility, said Patricia Benson, GHN and committee chair. Committee members “recognized the important need for increased campus health and wellness resources specifically designed to support employee well-being and proceeded to move the vision forward by seeking leadership support.
“I am extremely grateful for President Ramsey and Provost Willihnganz’s commitment to employee health and well-being in allowing us to move to the new facility, and to the Athletic Department and UofL Foundation for their financial support of the renovation,” she said.
Since GHN started eight years ago, UofL employees have become healthier because they’ve tapped the health resources the university offers and taken proactive steps to support their good health, Benson said.
Humana Gym will provide them even more opportunities and will be a space that all employees will enjoy for many years to come, she added.
Use of the new facility will be free to faculty and staff. Other membership details are being finalized and will be shared soon.
Faculty and staff who want to continue to work out on Belknap Campus will be able to do so at the gym in the Swain Student Activities Center. Students also use that facility and are expected to do so until the new Student Recreation Center opens in fall 2013.
