Campus Gallery Hop kicks off Homecoming week, highlights campus galleries
Art – It's Happening Here – and that is what the UofL Alumni Association wants everyone to know as it kicks off a weeklong Homecoming celebration.
Adapting the city's Friday Night Gallery Hop to the galleries on Belknap Campus, the association has joined with the Hite Art Institute, Ekstrom Libraries and the Speed Art Museum for the first Campus Gallery Hop on Oct. 1.
"It was surprising how much is going on here, even to those who work or study here every day,” said Valerie French assistant director of the alumni association.
The good news is that there is no need to wait for a trolley for the Campus Gallery Hop; galleries are separated by only a short walk.
The tour will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Hite Art Institute with a reception in Schneider Hall. On display there is the Billy Hertz’ exhibition “Farm Fields: History and Erosion” and new additions to the university art collection from the Dr. & Mrs. Maurice John gift of international paintings, prints and drawings.
From Schneider Hall, participants will take a short stroll to Ekstrom Library where they can see Depression-era photos by Dorothea Lange and other Farm Security Administration photographers from the Roy E. Stryker Collection at the Photo Archives. They also can see a Rare Books Kain Gallery exhibit taken from Special Collections' rare books and books about Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. and the 1963 March on Washington.
The tour will end at the Speed Art Museum, just a few steps away from Ekstrom Library. There, Hite Art Institute visiting artist Denyse Thomasos, of New York. Thomasos, will talk about her large-scale, architectural painting installations.
These exhibits will be on display: "Hattie Bishop Speed: A New Museum for Louisville, “City/ Country: Photographs from the Henry V. Heuser Jr. Collection," and the "English Silver from the Age of Matthew Boulton: The James C. Codell Jr. Collection."
Paid parking is available in the Speed Art Museum garage. For more information about the gallery hop and to RSVP call the UofL Alumni Association at (502) 852-6186 or go to the alumni website.
