B4B: Kentucky's Super Research Program Turns 10
Kentucky's immensely successful Research Challenge Trust Fund, better known as "Bucks for Brains," turns 10 this year. Since the program’s inception, UofL has matched all $115.5 million allocated through the program, allowing it to increase its number of endowed chairs from 25 to 126. And the payback has been fantastic.
The Governor's Best
When Kentucky's new governor Steve Beshear began putting together his cabinet, it soon became clear that several on his team would have strong ties to UofL.
2020 Vision
UofL's new strategic plan—Victory 2020: Making It Happen—will guide the institution to becoming a "preeminent metropolitan research university" by 2020. It is the sequel to the Challenge for Excellence.
Extreme Makeover
The popular TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition came to UofL in November while filming a segment on band member Patrick Hughes and his family. The show, which aired on Feb. 17, gave the Hughes's family home a "mega makeover" and made substantial improvements to the marching band’s practice field.
Writing Well in the Chelsea Hotel
UofL philosophy graduate Ed Hamilton—not to be confused with the well-known Louisville sculptor of the same name—has lived in New York City's famous Chelsea Hotel for more than a decade. It's a home that provided both the inspiration and subject matter for his first novel, Legends of the Chelsea Hotel.
