UofL, in partnership with the Partnership for a Green City, is sponsoring its annual Youth Summit Dec. 11 at JCTC’s Health Science Hall Auditorium from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. The focus of this year’s event will be on the Urban Heat Island and its implications to public health and ecological systems.

About 170 students and 18 teachers from 15 schools are expected to attend. Each will receive a meteorological station at their school.  The stations will be used to collect data to support research being conducted by Dr. David Howarth and Keith Mountain (geoscience and geography). Eight additional JCPS schools will be receiving meteorological stations used in conducting Urban Heat Island research.

“One of the critical sustainability issues Louisville faces is the public health and ecological impacts of having temperatures 2-3 degrees F higher than the surrounding area,” said Russell Barnett, director of research for the University of Louisville's Institute for the Environment and Sustainable Development.  “The Youth Summit will not only be a learning experience for future citizens, but they will also be participating in measuring the extent and implications of having a warmer climate in Louisville.”

The event is open to the public. For more information, contact Barnett at (502) 852-1851 or russell.barnett@louisville.edu.
