Student Affairs – Parent Association Internship

Position Description

The Student Affairs Parent Association Intern assists the Parent Association Coordinator with all programming and communication to parents of University of Louisville students.    The intern assists with the daily operations and special projects for parents within a progressive Student Affairs division.    The Intern will serve on university committees as needed.   In addition, the intern will do extensive research in the field of parent/university relations.    The Intern reports to the Parent Association Coordinator who reports directly to the Vice President of Student Affairs.   


Requirements

Preferred applicant should be pursuing a masters degree in College Student Personnel Services or Higher Education Administration.   


General Learning Objectives

  • Gain an understanding and working knowledge of the critical role of parents and the parent/student dynamics in the development and transition of students from high school to college.
  • Learn how to develop partnerships with parents to assist them in understanding the college student experience, support student learning, and empower students to take responsibility for their academic and social decision-making.
  • Develop programming skills to work with parents in the university setting.   

Learning Activities

  • Research emerging issues related to parents in the student transition process, including parent volunteer programs and parent development programs
  • Develop new parent programming based on research
  • Develop assessment measures to respond to parent needs
  • Attend organizational meetings as requested for parent programming
  • Major responsibility in planning parent sessions for Parent Orientation, Welcome Weekend, and Cardinal Family Weekend (depending on the semester)
  • Communicate with parents through Parent Newsletter, Parent Communique’ and Parent Helpline.     
  • Meet regularly with Parent Association Coordinator, maintaining pertinent items of discussion during these meetings
  • Prepare a summary report of the internship experience
