Disability Resource Center Internship Opportunities

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY (available both fall and spring semesters)

  • This internship would consist of assisting with the development of an assessment instrument, administration of the survey, and evaluation of the results. The purpose of the survey is to evaluate the effectiveness of the services coordinated by the Disability Resource Center and to generally measure campus climate for persons with disabilities.

SELF-ADVOCACY SKILL BUILDING WITH STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES (available both fall and spring semesters)

  • This internship would involve working with students with disabilities who want to improve their self-advocacy skills.   A brief survey to identify interest in this activity will be developed and administered electronically to students with disabilities. Intern will work with DRC staff to learn about impact of specific disabilities, DRC policies and classroom accommodations. Intern will then schedule interactions with students by either workshops or one-on-one, depending on the preferences of the students. Students will learn more about their specific disability and how it impacts them in the educational environment. The students will develop skills to use accommodations responsibly, and how to articulate their classroom accommodation needs to faculty.   Intern will develop assessment instrument to administer to student participants to determine effectiveness of self-advocacy skill building activities and make recommendations for revisions in the process for future applications.

PLANNING DISABILITY AWARENESS ACTIVITIES

(available spring semester only)

  • This internship will involve advance planning of disability awareness activities/programs to be delivered during the following fall semester. Focus will be placed on collaborative efforts with other campus departments and possibly community agencies. Will involve brainstorming with DRC staff to identify awareness activities, identifying and contacting other University units and community agencies to determine interest in collaborations with the DRC, and advance planning/scheduling of events and programs.  All aspects of disability awareness programming will be addressed with emphasis on how to plan an accessible event.

IMPLEMENTING DISABILITY AWARENESS ACTIVITIES

(available fall semester only)

  • This internship will involve the implementation of disability awareness activities/programs planned during the prior spring semester. DRC staff will assist but the intern will provide overall coordination to further develop and deliver the activities. Attention to detail and ability to carry out all logistics of coordinating programs is a must!  Will involve development of assessment instruments to administer to awareness activity participants to determine effectiveness of event and make recommendations for revisions for future events. Will involve “cementing” collaborations with other campus departments and/or community agencies to offer these programs in subsequent years.
