Additional Resources for Parents
Sending your student to college can be a challenging and stressful time in a parent's life. While at the University of Louisville, your student will encounter many opportunities to become involved outside of their classroom experience. It is important that you, the parent, be educated about the enriching experience your son or daughter will find by being involved in a fraternity or sorority at the University of Louisville.
What are the benefits of membership?
Scholarship: Scholarship and academic success are two of the most important aspects of your student's life at the University of Louisville. Our fraternities and sororities promote academics in a variety of ways and have consistently performed above the all-men and all-women's GPA for many years.
Leadership: Fraternities and sororities provide ample opportunities for students to gain leadership skills. Greek organizations are self-governing, self-running communities, so committee members and chapter officers are responsible for the operation of the chapter. Greek organizations also encourage members to hold leadership positions in organizations outside of the chapter.
Brotherhood/Sisterhood: The friendships that your son and/or daughter will experience in a fraternal organization are invaluable. Being initiated into a fraternity or sorority is life-time membership that comes with a family away from home, and a constant support group during and after college.
Is there alcohol and substance abuse associated with fraternities and sororities?
Although the social aspect of Greek Life is one of the reasons that many students get involved in fraternities and sororities, alcohol and substance abuse is not tolerated. All organizations have mandatory educational sessions on the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse, and UofL is committed to values that are contrary to inappropriate and dangerous behavior.
Do Greek organizations at the University of Louisville haze?
Physical and mental hazing is banned by the University, the (inter)national Greek organizations, and by the laws of the State of Kentucky. Hazing will not be tolerated at the University of Louisville.
