Veteran's Education Benefits

Students eligible to receive VA education benefits from the Montgomery GI Bill active duty, reserve/guard or dependent, must contact the U of L Veteran Affairs Office to complete the application process:

First time use of VA education benefits:

VA education benefits are authorized to veterans and qualified dependents under specific chapters of Title 38, U.S. Code (USC). Eligibility of these benefits is determined solely by the Dept of Veteran Affairs.

Chapter 30- Montgomery GIBill/Active Duty-Must complete 22-1990 Application for VA Education Benefits and submit with copy of #4 member copy of dd-214.

Chapter 1606- Montgomery GIBill/Reserve/Guard-Must complete 22-1990 Application for VA Education Benefits and submit with the Notice of Basic Eligibility from your unit.

Chapter 1607 (Reserve Education Assistance Program) - Reservists starting their benefits must complete 22-1990 "Application for VA Education Benefits" and submit with copy of dd-214 & Notice of Basic Eligibility. Reservists currently under 1606 and changing to 1607 need to submit a dd-214 or orders with a completed 22-1995.

Chapter 35- Dependents of Disabled Vets-Must complete 22-5490 Application for Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance.

Chapter 31- Vocational Rehabilitation- Must obtain a 22-1905 from the VA Vocational Rehabilitation counselor and submit to U of L Veteran Affairs office.

Transfer students:

Chapt 30, 1606 & 1607- If you received benefits while attending another school, complete the 22-1995 and submit to U of L Veteran Affairs Office.Chapt 35-If you received benefits while attending another school, complete the 22-5495 and submit to the UofL Veteran Affairs Office.

Once received, applications are mailed to the St Louis VA Regional for processing. It will take at lease 12-14 weeks for processing and disbursement of the first payment. It is the student’s responsibility to work out financial arrangements with the Bursar’s Office before the beginning of the semester.
